2.2 How the Universe Began: CosmologyVersion 1.3 January 2023 Previous Version ( Paragraph 1 Trans Error: Unknown )These are the questions we ask in the introduction (Section 0.1.6 – paragraph 8): ( Paragraph 2 Trans Error: Unknown )If god did not make the world (or the universe), where did it come from? How did our universe begin? How come it is so finely tuned for human beings? Where did the forces of nature come from? Where did matter and energy come from, the elements and radiation? Where did the stars come from? ( Paragraph 3 Trans Error: Unknown )We may refine these as we develop this Chapter. ( Paragraph 4 Trans Error: Unknown )This chapter covers cosmology, in just enough detail so that we can work out what to believe and why, so that we can decide what to do, in our day to day life, and in the big decisions of life. ( Paragraph 5 Trans Error: Unknown )No religion, philosophy or science explains existence itself – where anything came from. Even if a god created the universe, where did that god come from? Scientists have some speculative ideas, but they don’t know what happened before the Big Bang. But they do know a lot about what happened a split second after it started. ( Paragraph 6 Trans Error: Unknown )And even though there a many fundamental questions remaining in cosmology, especially about dark energy and dark matter, and perhaps quantum entanglement, all discussed in the following sections, scientists have a very convincing story to tell about how matter and energy evolved, and how the universe was populated with stars and planets. ( Paragraph 7 Trans Error: Unknown )We plan to look at how we know what we know under the following topic headings. For now, we have indicated below the questions we intend to address and the main topics we intend to cover. ( Paragraph 8 Trans Error: Unknown )
This is the current summary of our conclusions in this area: ( Paragraph 44 Trans Error: Unknown )No-philosophy, science or religion can explain the mystery of existence itself, but science explains how the universe evolved after the big bang, how fundamental forces like gravity and electromagnetism evolved, matter emerged from the primal energy, how the elements formed, how galaxies arose and stars began to shine. ( Paragraph 45 Trans Error: Unknown )more (later) Statement 8 ( Paragraph 46 Trans Error: Unknown )The detailed sections explain how we justify these conclusions. ( Paragraph 47 Trans Error: Unknown )
