2.2 How the Universe Began: CosmologyVersion 1.3 January 2023                                                           Previous Version These are the questions we ask in the introduction (Section 0.1.6 – paragraph 8): If god did not make the world (or the universe), where did it come from? How did our universe begin? How come it is so finely tuned for human beings? Where did the forces of nature come from? Where did matter and energy come from, the elements and radiation? Where did the stars come from? We may refine these as we develop this Chapter. This chapter covers cosmology, in just enough detail so that we can work out what to believe and why, so that we can decide what to do, in our day to day life, and in the big decisions of life. No religion, philosophy or science explains existence itself – where anything came from.  Even if a god created the universe, where did that god come from?  Scientists have some speculative ideas, but they don’t know what happened before the Big Bang.  But they do know a lot about what happened a split second after it started. And even though there a many fundamental questions remaining in cosmology, especially about dark energy and dark matter, and perhaps quantum entanglement, all discussed in the following sections, scientists have a very convincing story to tell about how matter and energy evolved, and how the universe was populated with stars and planets. We plan to look at how we know what we know under the following topic headings. For now, we have indicated below the questions we intend to address and the main topics we intend to cover.
This is the current summary of our conclusions in this area: No-philosophy, science or religion can explain the mystery of existence itself, but science explains how the universe evolved after the big bang, how fundamental forces like gravity and electromagnetism evolved, matter emerged from the primal energy, how the elements formed, how galaxies arose and stars began to shine.
