0.0 Time to Understand our BeliefsVersion 1.4 September 2017                                     Previous Version It takes time to work out a reasonable way to live a valuable and meaningful life in today’s world. Ask a devout believer in god or seeker after nirvana: it’s an ongoing struggle. Why bother to put in the effort if we each have a minimal impact on the rest of society? Section 0.1 has explanations of why global beliefs and values matter. But first a warning: Reading this will be a struggle for many people, perhaps a few pages a day will be enough. But it will be worthwhile if it clarifies for you what you believe and why. If you don't understand what your beliefs are, or where they come from, then you are exposed to being exploited by people offering quick and easy solutions. ●  Some leaders in society genuinely believe what they are saying, and believe it is in your best interests to follow their lead, but are still misleading because they have a limited understanding of the world. ●  Other leaders are more cynical. ●  Politicians all want your support or vote, but may not be looking after your interests. ●  Religious leaders often want more power, so that they can influence the wider society. ●  Companies use advertising and lobbyists so they can sell more and make more profits. ●  Many of our “elders” or “elites” want to maintain their elevated position in society. ●  If you understand what is in these pages – even if you disagree – then you will be more able to see that what many leaders promote is rubbish – and that many of them know that! Knowledge is power.  If we remain ignorant others will gain influence over us. We explain everything relevant to choosing what we think is the best way to live. We don't impose beliefs, or talk down to you. No prior knowledge is required, just curiosity. Each topic begins with an overview so that you know where we are going. If we haven’t explained something properly then add a comment or send an email so we can fix it.
