2.4 How the Life Began: Chemistry

Version 1.3 August 2015                                              (Previous Version)

These are the questions we ask in the introduction (Section 0.1.6 – paragraph 10):

If god did not create life, where did it come from?  How can all the complex processes required for just a single living cell come together all at once?  isn't it like a storm in a junkyard producing a jumbo jet?  Aren’t the chances of life so miniscule that is has to be a miracle?  How can dead matter suddenly come to life?  What is life anyway?

We may refine these as we develop this Chapter.

This chapter covers chemistry and biochemistry, in just enough detail so that we can work out what to believe and why, so that we can decide what to do, in our day to day life, and in the big decisions of life.

We plan to look at how we know what we know under the following topic headings. For now, we have indicated below the questions we intend to address and the main topics we intend to cover.

1. Simple Molecules:

How do molecules combine from the elements in the early earth?

2. Organic Molecules:

What are the basic organic compounds?

Is it reasonable to break down this area into these topics at this level?

Click on feedback, or add a comment below, to tell us if you agree or disagree, or suggest improvements.

3. Complex Molecules:

What are purines and pyrimidines?

4. Chain Molecules:

How did the building blocks of life form?

5. Possible RNA World:

What might the first life have been like?

6. Current DNA World:

What is the basic structure of life now?

7. Photosynthesis:

How do plants get their energy?

8. Respiration:

How do animals get their energy?

9. Metabolism:

How do simple cells function?

10. Reproduction:

Is sex the only way to reproduce?

11. Eukaryotes:

How did we get the complex cells we see today?

12. Life Affects the Earth:

Where did our atmospheric oxygen come from?

This is the current summary of our conclusions in this area:

Science is working out how life began: how simple chemical processes formed local cycles, copies of these formed, other molecules enclosed these processes to form living cells; how photosynthesis began (which made atmospheric oxygen), respiration captured energy for the cells, and how cells became more complex.

  more (later)                                                               Statement 10

The detailed sections explain how we justify these conclusions.
