1. PHILOSOPHYVersion 1.5 July 2016 (Previous Version) Why bother with philosophy? Is it of any practical use? What can we learn from it? Shouldn’t we use science to work everything out? Doesn’t science tell us everything is relative? Can we really say some things are true and others false? What is truly worth living or dying for? ● Is there such as thing as the Truth? Can we really know anything useful? ● Is the world that we see all that there is? What is real – is it all a dream? ● Are there valid philosophical reasons for believing in God? ● How can we know that other people are real? Are we free spirits or soulless robots? ● Can we really say that some things or behaviours are good and other actions bad? ● Is there such a thing as objective beauty – and do we really care? Most people are not interested in learning philosophy. A lot of the books and articles written by philosophers are difficult to read and understand, and seem to be irrelevant to real life. At the same time, most people also unconsciously adopt philosophical positions in accordance with their “common sense”, which is often the philosophical view which was “new” about 100 years ago. Many people mix up their unconsciously held philosophies with often vague understandings from science, history, religion and politics. But does it really matter? Philosophy matters if we want to choose the most effective way to live and to find meaning in life.
Philosophy as a discipline doesn’t have any firm conclusions, in the way that science does, except to say that it is better if we think clearly about things and work out what we actually mean and believe. We look at philosophy under the following headings, to see what we can learn for our philosophy:
As we go through each subject area, we come to various conclusions about the nature of reality. These conclusions clarify the choices we can make. Our core choices reflect our core values: Truth, Diversity, Reality, Life, Love, Beauty, Responsibility, Equality and Hope. Some people will make different choices from those we advocate. Others will make similar choices for different reasons. The core choices that we support reflect the core values of this Reasonable Global Way.
