  • 5.1 Art and Culture

Version 1.3 June 2017                                   (Previous Version)

These are the questions we ask in the introduction (Section 0.1.6 – paragraph 26):

How does our culture define us, or confine us?  How does culture affect our behaviour?  What benefits do we get from the arts?  Is it reasonable to expect modern people to value indigenous or medieval art?  Is the so called modern art really art?  Can a tower of toilets really be called art?  Is analysis worthwhile?  Is the theatre really dead?  Can TV serials or manga comics be treated as serious art?  What restrictions should we place on art and artists?  Is there any point in producing a work of art?

This Chapter provides a brief overview of art and culture around the world.  Many people are born and grow up in a single culture, even if there are other ethnic groups nearby.  Many white Americans have almost nothing to do with black Americans, despite their being over 12% of the population.  Many Sri Lankan Sinhalese have no interactions with Sri Lankan Tamils, who are about 8% of the population.

So there are typically multiple cultures within one nation state, (with the possible exception of Japan, which severely restricts immigration and citizenship).  The culture(s) we grow up in have a significant impact on what we perceive to the norms of society and behaviour, much of it unconsciously.  We all need to learn how our culture might restrict our awareness, and learn about other cultures.  Those who grow up or live in more than one culture are often conflicted, sometimes not knowing how to react.

Even the art presented purely as entertainment, from comic books, children’s cartoons, magazines to TV serials, influence how we view the world and what we think is normal.  Is the hero of the story young, fit, attractive, light skinned and male?  Are the antagonists portrayed as worthless, disposable beings, mad, evil or both, rather than flawed individuals who have redeeming features?

Religion is a large part of culture, but we address that in Part 4.  In this chapter we focus on the impact of single and multiple cultures on our beliefs and values, and the specific role of the arts, in reflecting and shaping our beliefs and values.  The next Chapter, on Culture and Media focusses on news and current affairs and the ways in which we are informed, or misled, about the nature of the world.

Our aim in this chapter is not to provide a definitive history or critical analysis of world art, but to clarify how we can benefit from art, and how we may influence its direction and impact.

We propose to look at culture and art under the following headings:

    1. Culture:

How can we become more aware of our cultural strengths and weakness?

    2. Multiple Cultures:

Can living in more than one culture have both benefits and disadvantages?

    3. Indigenous Art:

How do the arts reflect and change culture?

Is it reasonable to break down this area into these topics at this level?

Click on feedback, or add a comment below, to tell us if you agree or disagree, or suggest improvements.

    4. Representation:

There are many ways to portray the world.

    5. Abstract Art:

Is abstract art really art?  What use is it?

    6. Insight:

Can art help us to learn and grow?

    7. Entertainment:

Can we hope for better stories?

As stated in the chapter overview, this is the current summary of our conclusions in this area:

The best art and culture uses all appropriate techniques to provoke new experiences and emotional responses that lead to insight or express the otherwise inexpressible, adding to the universal narrative and our roles in it, but art must be authentic, honest in the intent behind its creation, display and consumption.

Do you know of any great music that would go well with this page?

Or any of the other pages?

    IF YOU DO, CLICK FEEDBACK.

It could be in any language, or have no words, or just be instrumental.  From pop, to classical, a cappella to orchestral!

Examples of the music we seek:

    ●   On the Tenets page, accessed from the main menu, our current choice is a Song Without Words from Mendelssohn (who died in 1847), Opus 14 Nbr 4, called Contentment.  Check it out: the Tenets conclude most times, I have a measure of content.

Chapter 2.3 covers the solar system and Earth’s development.  In there somewhere, surely we should be hearing Gustav Holst's The Planets, which premiered 100 years ago.  There is a movement for each of the planets.

Please tell as much identifying information as you can: a link, and/or the name of the piece and a person’s name may be enough, but if you know it please also send the artist/performer, composer/lyricist, year written, year recorded, record label, copyright owner, or similar details.

We have to worry about copyright: acknowledge it, and not infringe on it.  Music that is out of copyright, or was never copyrighted (eg like real, ie very old, folk music) is good.  Some material is ‘open source’ allowing others to use it for free.  For newer restricted copyright music we may have to seek permission to play it, but we can’t afford to pay for it.  It depends on the circumstances.  In general, copyright in text, images and music lasts for 70 years after the year of the creator's death, even if the creator does not own copyright.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of Country, throughout all colonised lands, and their connections to land, waters and community. We pay respect by giving voice to truth, values and social justice, acknowledging our shared history, and valuing the cultures of first nations peoples.
